Royal Society of New Zealand

The Royal Society of New Zealand delivers EMAP in New Zealand. The aim of RSNZ is to promote a critical awareness of science and technology in schools, in industry and in society.

GLOBE International

GLOBE is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based education and science programme. GLOBE in New Zealand is delivered through the EMAP project.

National Waterways Project (Archive)

Since 2000 the National Waterways Project has assisted schools and students with exploring their freshwater streams. Now that NWP is delivered through EMAP, the old NWP website is archived and can be accessed by clicking the above link.

The NZAEE website is a good source of news and information about environmental education in New Zealand and around the world. You can also find out about resources and programmes hosted by NZAEE and information about the latest NZAEE conference.

NIWA

The NIWA site has initiatives for schools, stuff for students, activities and classroom resources.

Department of Conservation

This links to the 'For Schools' section of the DOC website which provides information and resources to support conservation education programmes in schools.

Landcare Research

Landcare Research have developed a number of resources on New Zealand's plants and animals for use by teachers and students. They also have satellite images and climate change resources.

Landcare Trust

Landcare Trust provides examples for sustainable management and the integrated catchment management (ICM) model approach. Landcare Trust also support and encourage many community groups.

Wild about New Zealand

This is a community based biodiversity monitoring and action programme. It supports schools and community groups to monitor an area of land and/or waterway in your local environment on a regular basis. Through the programme your school would learn about all the interactions that occur in your environment, build up a picture of the biodiversity status, and identify some of the most serious threats to local wildlife. Using this information, you can then plan appropriate actions to restore or enhance the biodiversity - turning the tide for your local wildlife.

Up the Creek

Up the Creek is part of the Government's Biodiversity website. Students can join Dion, Rick, and Ani on a trip up the creek to learn how fresh water supports life.

The Whitebait Connection

The Whitebait Connection is an action based environmental education programme. It aims to inspire and educate schools, community groups and tangata whenua to restore and take care of the life sustaining force of their local streams and catchments. The Programme is available to schools in Northland, Westport, Nelson and Blenheim.

Experiencing Marine Reserves

An innovative marine education programme developed in Northland is bringing school children and community groups face to face with the marine environment. The programme involves investigating marine biodiversity and local marine environments before venturing to the fully protected marine reserve. After the marine reserve experience, students put their knowledge to action within the community. At this stage the programmme is only available to schools in Northland and Auckland.

Global Education Centre (GEC)

The GEC provides training and resources to support both the formal and informal education sectors. Global Education aims bring about a more just and sustainable world through a process which enables people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world.

Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit

The ESD Toolkit is an easy-to-use manual for individuals and organisations from both the education and community sectors. This resource addresses the potentially powerful alliance of school systems and communities working together to reach local sustainability goals. It is a US resource but it relevant to us in Aotearoa.

Other Environmental School Programmes and Resources

CREST

CREST is an international awards scheme designed to encourage student projects in Science and Technology. Because it teaches students to be innovative, creative, and to problem solve, and is highly motivational, it can inspire, from an early age, an enduring passion for science and technology. Ideal for use in Years 6 - 13 Technology and Science classes, students can also then enter their completed CREST projects into regional Science and Technology Fairs, Neighbourhood Engineers, ETITO Bright Sparks and other competitions. CREST projects can also help provide the evidence for assessment against NCEA achievement or unit standards.

GLOBE at Night

GLOBE at Night is an annual campaign in March each year that explores light pollution in the light sky.  Join thousands of other students, families and citizen-scientists around the globe hunting for stars.  For activities and to learn how to be involved visit the GLOBE at Night homepage.

CloudSat

In April 2006, CloudSat launched CALIPSO to enhance the monitoring of clouds from space. This programme links in with GLOBE’s atmosphere protocols.

Digital Library for Earth System Education

Discover online educational resources about our Earth at the Digital Earth Library for Earth System Education (DLESE). This is a free service for funding valuable online resources for teaching and learning about the Earth. DLESE ensures that the resources are available and relevant to the Earth system, and scrutinises each resource to ensure it is scientifically accurate.

Enviroschools

Enviroschools is working towards this vision through a whole school approach to environmental education. Students develop skills, understanding, knowledge and confidence through planning, designing and creating a sustainable school. Action projects undertaken by enviroschools have both environmental and educational outcomes that benefit the school and the wider community.

Kids Edible Gardens

Kids Edible Gardens is a Christchurch based initiative that assists schools implementing organic gardening so that children learn how to grow their own vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruit.

Organic Gardens and Mara Maori

A report on TKI that covers student learning through the creation and maintenance of organic and Maori gardens.

Trees For Survival

The Trees for Survival programme supports students of all ages to grow and plant native trees on designated land to prevent soil erosion, improve water quality and increase biodiversity.

SHMAK

This leads to a downloadable SHMAK Manual. Each chapter can be downloaded as a PDF or Microsoft Word file. There is an order form for obtaining a kit (including manual), or for the manual on its own.

SHMAK Worksheet

Using a SHMAK kit, students can assess the ecological health of their local stream with a few simple experiments. A worksheet outlining these investigations can be found at this link.

Google Earth

Google Earth is a virtual globe programme that maps the entire earth by pasting images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS over a 3D globe. Explore the powers of digital earth by downloading it free-of-charge.
